VARK learning style

Hi, I hope you are having a great week.

Let’s talk about our class from March 19th and 21st

First, on March 19th we reviewed the definition of multiple intelligences, to do so we made groups and read the definitions one by one. On the other hand, we learned the VARK learning styles which were introduced by Neil Fleming  and colleen Mills on 1992. The VARK learning styles, in simple words means:

Visual: People who learn best by seeing things, like pictures, diagrams, or written information.

Auditory: People who learn best by listening, like through lectures, discussions, or audio recordings.

Reading/Writing: People who learn best by reading and writing, like through textbooks, notes, or written instructions.

Kinesthetic: People who learn best by doing things, like through hands-on activities, experiments, or practical tasks.

We also did a test to find out our learning style and I got:

Multimodal (AK)

  • Visual 3
  • Aural 9
  •  Read/write 4
  •  Kinesthetic 8

On March 21st we classified a list of characteristics and assigned it to the 4 learning styles, then we discussed those paragraphs.

Later in groups we discussed the activities a group of auditory learners can do.  Our list of ideas was the following: Podcasts, watching videos, lectures, speeches, singing songs, watching movies, reading aloud, listening to music or audio materials, taking oral quizzes, and making student presentations.

On the other hand, these are my results of the VARK tests taken in class:

  •  Visual 11
  • Auditory  14
  • Kinesthetic 6

I agree with the results because when it is about memorizing something I rather to listen and repeat out loud.

Have a great vacation!

Multiple intelligences

Hi! Thank you so much for visiting my blog.

During classes from March 12th  and March 14th, we learned about the multiple intelligences and we had an interesting test.

The theory about multiple intelligences was developed by Dr. Howard Gardner in 1983 and it focuses on how students learn and their learning styles. It also states that all people learn in different ways, for example, by listening or using the body, etc.

According to the multiple intelligence theory, there are 9 intelligences which are verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, visual-spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical-rhythmic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic and existential.

verbal-linguistic is about being good with words, language and communication. Logical mathematics is about using numbers, reasoning, and logic. Visual-spacial is when someone is good at visualizing things, understanding locations. Musical rhythm is having the ability to understand pitches, tones, music and rhythms. Bodily-kinesthetic is about using the body and expressing oneself through movement. Interpersonal intelligence is about knowing how to interact with other people. The intrapersonal is about understanding yourself and your own thoughts and feelings. Naturalist intelligence is about appreciating nature (animals and plants) and existential intelligence is analyzing questions about human existence.

On March 14th we did a multiple intelligence test and basically, we had to rate the answer with 0, 1 or 2 then we had to calculate the results, for example, if we had one answer of 0 to 4 we had to color a portion of the intelligence wheel and if we had a result from 5 to 7 we had to color until a part that had dots and if had from 8 to 10 we had to color the whole portion. At the end we had to have the intelligence wheel based on our answers; my results are the following:

Although I didn’t agree with my results, I think tests like this are good to keep learning about our intelligences.

Community language learning, Task-based teaching, Content-based teaching

Hello! It’s great to have you on my blog!

We are starting the second period of this semester and I’m happy to share with you a little bit of the class we had on March 5th and 7th

On March 5th we learned about three methods that have a collaborative approach which are the following:

1-      community language learning is the teaching method that emphasizes learning in a group that is like a tribe. In this method, learners rely on each other for support and create a sense of mutual learning. Additionally, this method doesn’t require preparation from the teacher, instead bringing a topic in the target language then students have a natural conversation and interaction, which is why this is more effective for students in intermediate and advanced levels, besides, the purpose is to acquire fluency.

2-      Task-based teaching focuses on planning, teamwork and requires a well-crafted project, also it requires more time than the community language learning due to the preparation of activities, for example, the presentations we had two weeks ago.

3-      In simple words, Content-based teaching is about teaching a foreign language by studying subjects such as science, social studies, math, geography, etc.

On the other hand, as an example we made groups, we chose a leader who took notes of our mistakes, in our case, we chose Genesis, then teacher Orlando gave us controversial topics and we discussed about it.

On March 7th we made had review about the previous session which was the collaborative approach and learned more about the activities of this method. Just to mention a few of them: pair groups of discussions, role plays like dramas, jigsaw activities, listening triangles, talk partners, think pair and share moving, and some others.

The activity that caught my attention was the jigsaw activity, which is about making groups, assigning them a task to collect information and then the students exchange the information.

Presentations-Last entry of period 1

Hi, it’s great to have you back on my blog.

On February 27th, we enjoyed learning from my classmates’ presentations.

To begin with, Esperanza’s group talked about the Total physical response (TPR) which is about teaching students about body movements. They made us dance and gave us candies; we enjoyed it.

Fatima’s group explained the grammar-translation method and the activity was about choosing the right translation of the words they pasted on the whiteboard.

William’s group spoke about the direct method, and we enjoyed playing the game “charades”.

Katy’s group talked about the audiolingual method, and their activity was about acting as kids while teacher Katia taught us a song, and after participating they gave us candies.

Genesis’s group explained the silent way method by associating colors with vowels, then they gave us cookies to those who participated in their activity.

Finally, Alejandra’s group spoke about the Direct method, after that, they surprised us with a test about writing the correct name of different shapes.

We had a great time listening to our classmates and learning together.
